Complete Your EWPA Yellow Card Course With Training Up
All participants should be at least 16 years of age. Restrictions apply for those under 18 years.
Our EWPA Yellow Card course is for people using or intending to use Scissor Lifts, Vertical Lifts or Boom Lifts below 11 metres. You will be provided with the training required to safely and efficiently use this type of equipment. You will receive theoretical and practical training as part of this training package.
Please note that minimum numbers for training courses apply. Courses may not proceed if booking numbers are insufficient. We will of course assist with transferring to another date or provide a full refund if that is not suitable.
Scissor Lift (SL)
Scissor type EWP is described as a ‘work platform which can only move in the vertical plane on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work’. Unlike the boom type, it has no ability to telescope or rotate. The mechanism to achieve this is the use of linked, folding supports in a criss-cross ‘X’ pattern. Scissor types can be self-propelled, trailer or truck mounted and come with or without outriggers or stabilisers.
Vertical Lift (VL)
Vertical mast or personnel lifts come in two configurations. Both elevate us ing a telescopic mast in a vertical direction only. These lifts usually have limited capability in terms of weight and extension, and are most often used for internal maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs.
Boom Lift (BL)
An elevating work platform by which is described as a ‘Telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device or any combination of these used to support a platform/basket on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work’. Boom types can be self-propelled, trailer mounted, truck mounted, and come with or without outriggers or stabilisers.
EWPA Course Content
The EWPA Yellow Card training course offers comprehensive theoretical and hands-on practical training provided by trainers accredited by the EWPA. Course participants will gain theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills in the following:
- Hazard identification, risk assessment and controls
- Fall arrest harness inspection, fitting and use
- Identify safe operating parameters using data plate and manual
- Conduct pre and post operational checks
- Operation of EWP
- Emergency procedures
- Theory assessment and practical observation and demonstration

About The Course
The EWPA training program has no prerequisite units. However, MEWPs require operators to have a thorough
understanding of the risks associated with using them. This includes being able to read and understand
technical information such as instructions for emergency lowering systems, wind speed ratings, variable rated
capacity restrictions, operator’s manuals and logbook checklists.
The EWPA Accredited Trainer must be confident that the knowledge and skills imparted have been taken in
and understood by the participant and assessed to the level that the operator can be deemed competent.
Students should be a minimum of 16 years of age. Operating restrictions apply for those under 18 years of age and parental consent is required to enrol in the course.
Students will need to bring:
- their Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- Photo ID
- PPE – steel cap boots, long pants, long sleeves
- Students under the age of 18 need to complete a parental consent form
Training Up will supply the machinery, however, if you would like to book an EWPA training course onsite at your organisation we can use your machinery. Please get in touch to discuss as certain requirements have to be met before we can train onsite.
- The enrolment fee is due prior or on the day of the training course.
- If the student’s Learning, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) levels are determined by Training Up to be below the standard required to complete the coursework successfully,Training Up will offer a full refund.
- Cancellation made up to 48 hours prior to the training course: the student will receive a full refund.
- If the student doesn’t show up for the training: there will be no refund unless in unusual circumstances f.ex. illness, accident… Training Up may request to see evidence prior to rescheduling.
- If the student reschedules within 48 hours prior the training course: no fees apply. Otherwise, there will be a $50 rescheduling fee.
- If a student arrives to the training course late, they will not be allowed to participate and there will be no refund.
- If a student does not bring the required Photo ID or PPE, we may have to reschedule and a $50 fee will apply.
- If a student does not pass the assessment and requires to attend a second day of training, a $50 fee will apply.
- For on-site training, all prerequisites must be met or Training Up may reserve the right to cancel the training on the day and cancellation fees of $50 per student will apply.
- On rare occasions, Training Up may cancel a training course and will notify and reschedule students if this is the case or offer a full refund.
The EWPA Course takes one day face-to-face, approximately 6 hours, depending on class size and prior knowledge and experience. Classes are limited to 10 people. Training takes place in our Peakhurst facility. The theory component will take place in our air-conditioned classroom and the practical component will be held in the workshop where students will learn to operate the different equipment.
Upon successful completion of the EWPA course you will have gained the skills required to safely operate the scissor, vertical and boom lift machines to a height of 11m or below.
Your Accredited Trainer will then submit training records to the EWPA who will approve your training and provide you with an EWP Operator Licence with the proof training and your photograph on the card.
You will be able to apply for a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301E – Operate Elevating Work Platforms.
Please advise your Accredited Trainer if you require this as there is additional paperwork to be completed.
An interim record of training from the EWPA will be emailed to you upon approval of your licence by the EWPA and this can be used when operating a MEWP until you receive your yellow card. The Yellow card will be posted to your supplied address.
The Yellow Card will be valid for 5 years.
